    About Our Work

Skull and Skeleton Quality  Skull, Skeleton and Bone Cleaning Service

Skulls and skeletons offered by Skulls Downunder Ltd are neither protected species nor CITES listed. They have been legitimately and ethically obtained as by- products from the New Zealand pet meat processing industries, Pest Destruction Boards and/or their agents .

Potential skull, skeleton and bone material that would otherwise be rendered down, discarded, or buried, is collected and processed into aesthically valuable, educational, and collectable material. We assure you that animals supplied to us are not killed for the sole purpose of obtaining their skull and/or skeleton.

CITES and Protection Status We do receive enquiries with reference to the marsupials, Brushtail Possum (T.vulpecula) and the Wallaby (M.rufogriseus) we provide, as to their Protection and CITES status. Although protected within their native Australia, they are not protected in New Zealand, from where our marsupial specimens originate The above named marsupials are not a CITES listed species

Skulls and Skeletons offered are prepared to a quality that equates with the finest of those offered by museums throughout the world.

Preserving the finest detail in specimens is obtained using Dermastis beetle to remove all external tissue. Solvent vapor phase bath (24 hours at 87oC) removes oils, fats and waxes from bone material that would otherwise lead to discolouration and offensive odours. Lastly, a bleaching process whitens the bone.

These last two process have the secondary effect of sterilizing bone materials.
